What is a RIP
In its simplest form, a RIP (Raster Image Processor) interprets the data from your image file into a form that your printer can understand;this translated information tells your printer how to lay down the dots of each ink to reproduce your image on the printed page. Most of the RIPs available today will support PostScript 3, so it will make these translations for Raster data (bitmapped or photo), vector data (design elements created in your Graphics Application) and text.
Why do I need a RIP?
Most large-format printer manufacturers provide some sort of printer driver or rudimentary onboard RIP to make this conversion. Most users need more than this in order to achieve anything like optimal results from their printer. The advantages of a professional RIP fall into two categories: Color and Workflow.
